Abstract

Large software development projects commonly test developed code in the environment of a virtual machine provided by the Virtual Machine Facility (VM/370). Alterations to the data sets and load modules of the target system have generally required updates by means of jobs run on that target system in the virtual-machine environment. Such an update procedure is time-consuming and error prone in terms of both human and machine. The target system may not be stable enough to run the job to do the update in all cases, and the operator, though actually working at a terminal and interacting with the real machine, is forced to specify the update in a control language designed for background (batch) processing.
