A point-of-sale (POS) system for recording retail transactions includes a primary POS terminal 1, a backup POS terminal 2 and a number of remote POS terminals 3, 4, etc. Each terminal 1-4 includes a keyboard and display for data entry, an internal data processor and a communications interface for transferring both transaction data and applications programs. Data and programs travel on a serial communications cable 5 between any terminal and a processor-controlled diskette drive physically located within primary terminal 1. Upon power-up, primary terminal 1 assigns addresses to the other terminals, then polls them for tasks to be performed.
