Abstract

Associated with any general purpose computer, there is usually some form of error handling or recovery procedures. The errors which occur making recovery necessary, for purposes of explanation, will be called machine checks, which are malfunctions of the hardware or software facilities. Recovery procedures may exist at several levels within the computer, starting with the hardware and proceeding through multiple levels of error handling called machine check handlers. These machine check handlers are very costly to implement, but are justified due to increased reliability to continue normal processing.
