In rotating disk or printing wheel type printers of the type described in U.S. Patent 4,030,591, most time consuming of the operations and consequently the one which imposes the greatest limitations upon increased printer speed, is the selection of the next character on the printing wheel. The conventional wheel is the 96-position printing wheel. The present system speeds up character selection on such a 96-position printing wheel by determining the shortest route from the last selected character or starting point to the next selected character.
