The stream of drops in an ink jet printing machine is often monitored optically, both to ascertain its presence and to sense deviations that can be corrected through electronic feedback. Shown in the figure is a top view of an optical detector system that (a) does not require an independently aligned aperture and (b) is relatively insensitive to variations in stream height.
