Portable data collection device 1 includes scanner 2 for reading data from a record, such as magnetic stripe card 3, and recording the data read in a temporary memory, such as a magnetic tape cassette 4. Data can also be entered by keyboard 5 and displayed in line display window 6. A time-of-day and data calculator within device 1 provides a coded representation of date and time to be recorded, along with each data entry made by scanner 2 or keyboard 5. Periodically, cassette memory 4 is placed in a tape reader 7, connected by a data loop 8 to a control processing unit. The data collected is collated and interpreted, along with related data from other collection units, by reference to the time and date information associated with each entry.
