PN binary sequences have been used primarily in radar systems because of one of their properties, a peaked auto-correlation function. It has been found that another of the properties of these sequences makes them particularly useful in position encoding schemes; i.e., a periodic arrangement of PN sequences of N elements contains 2/N/-1 unique N element bit patterns.
