Silicon rods, tubes and sheets are formed by placing the lower end of evacuated quartz tubes of various cross-sections into a vessel, such as a quartz crucible, of molten silicon. Silicon shrinks more than quartz during cooling so that the silicon rod separates from the tube and can be easily removed.
