This circuit provides sampling of data signal levels at early and late times during data bit periods to determine whether there has been unwanted (or in some cases wanted) transition during the bit time. Such transitions can occur as the result of a data error, either in the data stream or in the decoding thereof, and thereby constitute a "machine check" condition, or they may occur at other times to indicate that the data stream included a "code violation" utilized to indicate a message boundary, such as an end-of-message.
