This invention relates to a low cost apparatus for the low to medium secure coding of data in an electronic storage/office file or communication context when the source data is not available to the intruder. The apparatus includes a function generator comprising a shift register for concatenating bits of a pseudo-random bit stream by the repeated modulo division of one polynomial by a lower-order polynomial key. The initial register setting constitutes the key. The apparatus further includes means for logically combining (exclusive ORing) a data bit stream with the pseudo-random number bit stream at a single point.
