A relay based on a piezo material is able to operate both fast and under extreme conditions of temperature and vacuum. A U-shaped body is cut out of a disk of piezo ceramic. On both surfaces it carries electrodes in an area adjacent to the outer edges. At the ends gold contacts face each other inside the legs. Applying drive currents causes bending movement, actuating the relay.
