The major unit of data storage and retrieval in an OS/VS operating system is the dataset. Each dataset created is given a name in order to allow the data contained in it to be retrieved at any time. A dataset name consists of from one to 44 characters, including periods. For each eight characters or less there must be a period. Thus a dataset name is partitioned into one to eight character qualifiers by means of periods. For example, the name A.BB.CCC has three qualifiers. A dataset name is not allowed to contain consecutive periods.
