Asynchronous Contention Resolution
In bus communications systems, circuitry must be provided to resolve
contention among attached devices for the bus. One means for resolving
contention in a decentralized manner is described below.
Contention among several attachments may be resolved by assigning unique
addresses to each attachment and then requiring contenders to signal on a bit-
serial line the most significant bit first. The line must OR the respective bits of all
signalling attachments and attachments which find the line unequal to the bit they
currently present must abstain from presenting lower-order bits.
As the physical length of the bus increases, there is an increase in the worst-
case propagation delay between attachments. The contention - resolution
technique described above requires a round-trip delay (signal propagation from
one end of the bus to the other, and back) worst-case for each bit during
contention resolution. If the bit transmission rate for contention is the same as
that for data transmission, the rate of data transmission can be severely limited
when the bus is physically long, or has many attachments.
Two features of the described system contribute to the solution of this
problem. First, a separate signalling channel for contention resolution is
required, and, second, the transmission rate of bits in the contention resolution
channel is not the same as the data transmission rate. Furthermore, contention
