A method is described to allow application programs to supply a set of commands which will instruct an installation tool to set up the proper structure for the use of the application in a networking environment. An installation tool with the ability to install any application on a network File Server is described. The ability to share application programs is one of the main goals of a networking environment. This goal is difficult to realize because of the complicated structure needed by a File Server. Installation tools are needed to set up and maintain this file structure to guarantee an application program's integrity and to allow it to be used by several users concurrently. Previous attempts at tools to simplify the installation process were limited in scope.
