A ribbon is fed at one rate when a resistive ribbon printer is in a quality print mode and at a slower rate when the printer is in a draft, ribbon-saving mode. A ribbon-saving mechanism has a resistive ribbon 1 fed at a higher rate by a pinch roll 2 in cooperation with a feed roller 3. The feed roller 3 is slidably mounted on a feed shaft 4 so as to be moved between the positions of Figs. 1 and 2. When in the position of Fig. 1, the feed roller 3 rests on a flange 5 of the feed shaft 4. The bottom of the feed shaft 4 extends through a ribbon plate 6 (Fig. 3) for driving by a mechanism (not shown) to advance the ribbon 1 (Fig. 1). The feed roller 3 has a retainer 7 mounted in its upper end.
