Disclosed are chiral smectic liquid crystal compounds. These liquid crystals are represented by the general formula (I), where R1 is an alkyl- or alkoxy-group and the number of carbon atoms may be in the range of 6 - 18. R2* is an optically active group containing one or two asymmetric carbon atoms such as (L)-2-methylbutyl group to induce a helicoidal structure and "m" may be in the range of 0 - 5. Since these liquid crystals have chiral smectic C phase in a wide temperature range, including room temperature, capability of fast response to applied voltage and high chemical stability, these compounds are highly suitable as a liquid crystal composition, especially for ferroelectric liquid crystals.
