A CRT display system consisting of a static background display as well as a dynamic partition or window which may be updated or scrolled is disclosed. Generally, three full screen size buffers are required to support this operation. The first buffer (A) contains the static or background information. The other two buffers (B and C) maintain the display and update information for the partition. The arrangement described here replaces one of these buffers (e.g., buffer C) by the undisplayed portion of the background buffer A. The savings achieved by this is one-third of the buffer cost which is very significant, particularly in multi-plane or color displays. The coordinates of the window are given by Ytop, Ybot, Xleft and Xright. In a raster scan system these coordinates can be translated to buffer addresses.
