An operator can perform printer offline functions (paper movement, correction of paper, font, or ribbon errors, etc.) with a printer having no control button to go offline or without the operator having to go to a printer having control buttons to activate its control buttons to go offline. This enables the operator to view printer errors on the cathode ray tube of the personal computer (PC). The system functions as a result of software in the PC and in the microcomputer controlling the printer. When communication between the PC and the printer is to occur, an Autofeed signal is raised by the PC at time T1. At time T2, the printer recognizes that the Autofeed signal has gone high and the printer goes offline if it is not already offline.
