Backlight Illumination Method for Robotics Application

Using a light shield with relative motion to a camera lens provides controlled backlighting at a camera-equipped robot hand, eliminates the need for a backlight table, and eliminates the need for the robot hand motion required for carrying the object to the backlighting table for image acquisition. Backlighting is ideally suited for applications in which the silhouettes of objects are sufficient for recognition and other relevant measurement, such as object position and orientation. It is also used for inspection of semi-opaque objects. Robotics applications (Image Omitted) may use a backlighting table, where the robot arm moves the object over the table, and the robot views an image over the contrast scene. This requires the robot to pass over a backlighting table along its path in each operating cycle.
