A method is described to permit attaching IBM PC 3270 Emulation Program to a 3270 control unit and the ability to distribute device specific and non-specific communication check messages of various types across the PC network. The IBM PC 3270 Emulation Program Release 1.0 only has the capability to broadcast Communications Reminder messages across the PC network to active devices. The Distributed Function Terminal (DFT) attachment requires ability to distribute communications check messages of various kinds (communication, program, and machine) to either all devices or specific devices. In accordance with the new method, the check message number is distributed using a 2-byte field. This 2-byte field contains the check message number which ranges from 1 to 999 decimal.
