Sliding Plate Locator System for Locating Surface Mounted Components

The system described herein provides accurate location control during assembly of surface mounted components to printed circuit cards. Fig. 1 illustrates the components of the sliding plate locator system. Locator plates A and B can be fabricated by chemically etching component apertures from glass photo plotted masters. The length and width dimensions of the component apertures are larger than the outline of the component by the accuracy of the component placement device. The Z-height compensating plate contains pockets of varying depth to accommodate different component heights. The base of each pocket is lined with a compliant material.
