This article describes a mechanism for retracting the print head to compensate for thicker documents inserted between the feed rolls in a printer. By mechanically coupling the pressure roll shaft to the support shaft, on which the machine printer head carriage assembly traverses the width of the document to be printed, the print head will be slightly retracted when thicker documents are placed between the pressure roll and the feed roll of the printer. The figure illustrates the principles of the design. The feed roll 6 and the print head carriage shaft 5 are connected together to provide compensation for document thickness variations by moving the print head on the carriage shaft 5 away from the feed roll 8 slightly. The machine frame is shown in the figure as 4.
