This mechanism is a way to manage the reception and temporary storage of short messages from a communication bus in connection with a computer. It deals with situations, such as running out of storage space, early notification of running out of storage space, and automatic switching between storage areas when a storage area is filled. This mechanism is meant for implementation in hardware, with supervision by software. Small messages may arrive on a communication medium and require storage until the system can process them. The hardware that interfaces the system to the communication medium must be able to store these messages. It is important that messages not be rejected due to lack of space if at all possible. This scheme is one way to handle this problem in hardware.
