RT PC Data Management allows the creation of indexes on the data in a Data Management Services (DMS) file by specifying the location of the data in the record that is to be indexed. The data stored at the specified location in a record is called a key. When a file is opened with an index, the records in the file can be read in the order of the keys in the index by a system call "dmsgets" with the "next" option. When a location of a record is modified that is the same as the location the index keys are taken from, the position of the current record in the index is confused because the value of the current key has changed. The usual way of getting around this problem is to not allow the keys (in the index being used to search) to be changed.
