A method is described that automates the generation of syntax diagrams for programming languages. Providing syntax diagrams as reference for a programming language is a manual, time-consuming effort. In accordance with the new method, a program is written that uses a BNF (Backus-Naus Form) description of a programming language as input to create as output a script file containing the syntax diagrams. This file is scripted and printed to provide the finished diagrams. This program is language independent; diagrams can be produced for any language for which a BNF can be written.
