A method is described which creates a compiler that accepts the same source code in either the CMS or the AIX* environment and produces code for execution in either environment. A symmetric cross compiler is a compiler that will accept the same source code for a given application in either of its environments. The code can be complied in either the CMS or the AIX environment, and can produce code for execution in either environment. Cross compilers are common. An unusual feature of this compiler is its symmetry, i.e., the compiler that was ported by using cross compilation can also compile for the same two environments that the original compiler can. This symmetry provides great flexibility in the development environment, since the resources in either environment can be used to develop code for either environment.
