A method is described to protect licensed software in a network environment where several users have access to a file server which contains software which is to be accessed only by a limited number of users concurrently. Protection of licensed software is a constant challenge for the software development industry. Many complicated schemes exist to prevent the user from making unauthorized copies of the product and to prevent the use of the product on more than a given number of computers at one time. It has also become common in the industry to provide customers with a license agreement that allows for an agreed-upon number of copies of the software to be in use at a given time. In a network environment it becomes difficult to control access to licensed software.
