This article describes a technique used in the input/output (I/O) subsystem of a data processing system that provides for dynamic configuration and initialization of I/O without manual intervention. A general system I/O bus with characteristics sufficient to support the initialization mechanism has two types of units residing on the bus as follows: 1.The system bus controller (SBC), which is responsible for managing the I/O on the bus, in particular, for the initialization of the I/O, the assignment of addresses, and bus arbitration. 2. The bus units themselves, which represent the I/O controllers residing on the bus.
