Abstract

Fig. 1 shows one method of generating an 8-bit CRC. In the past, CRC's have been described and implemented as single bit serial processors. The IBM 3480 Tape Subsystem uses a serial type CRC, but the implementation is a parallel implementation (the 16-bit CRC is generated by inputting 8-bit bytes into the CRC generator). (Image Omitted) The CRC circuit of Fig. 1 defines a byte-oriented CRC and a byte- oriented implementation. The code described by Fig. 1 is a single redundancy (check symbol), 256-ary, Reed-Solomon code with an appropriate prime polynomial.
