Additional functions, such as facsimile or electronic filing, are added at low incremental cost to a serial printer used in a PC/Workstation. Additional functions are attained by incorporating an optical scanning head on the printer and using the existing microprocessor, disk drive(s) and the mechanism controlling the vertical and horizontal movements of the printhead. An optical scanning head 10 shown in the figure can consist of a diode array 11, such as a 128 element charge coupled device with its associated circuit board 12 and with its own illumination 13. Scanning head 10 is mounted to the print carriage to the left of the printing element. In this manner, printing and scanning functions can be independently utilized without interfering with one another.
