This article describes an application of switchable damping resistor to regular preamplifier by providing a damping resistor outside the regular preamplifier. A damping resistor is necessary for improving the performance of the read and write operations of a magnetic disk device. The damping resistor is disconnected at the read operation and connected at the write operation. Therefore, it is called switchable damping resistor. The damping resistor has been incorporated inside a preamplifier. As a result of the custom preamplifier, the value of the damping resistor is fixed for the preamplifier. Under the circumstances, it is not possible to set the optimum damping resistor for the preamplifier according to the head to be used.
