A method is described for allowing a user to print documents on printers attached locally to a personal computer (PC). The method takes advantage of the PC File Transfer capability for moving host files to a PC, and it provides convenient printer support for the business professional who uses a host-based word processing package with a PC workstation but would also like the convenience of printing the documents locally on a printer attached to the personal computer workstation. Previous approaches to this problem employed the transfer of an ASCII file from the host without the imbedded control characters specifying such features as Bold or Underline text. This method allows the user to request that a DisplayWrite Revisable Form Text (RFT) document be converted on the host processor to a Final Form Text (FFT) document.
