Abstract

An improved Tape Formatter is disclosed consisting of 3480 tape drives, data flow and device adapter units. A programmable External Register (XR) Bus Sequencer card (unique to the OEM Formatter) is added to translate the user control sequences into the XR bus sequences required to control the subsystem. The user provides a resident adapter to translate the control interface (provided by the sequencer) and the data interface (provided by the data flow) into an interface with the characteristics required by the using system. The Tape Formatter must be tested prior to installation of the user's adapter. The Tape Formatter Test System was provided for this purpose. The test system consists of a PC-XT, two PC/XR Bus Sequencer adapters with connecting cables, an XR Bus Sequencer, and a 3480 Buffer Memory (256 K).
