Abstract

An impact printer having a fixed single-width character font is capable of supporting double-width character printing while preserving the integrity of the page image. An impact printer prints characters of a fixed width. Thus, an impact printer does not support a double-wide character function in which the characters have their width doubled because the impact printer has only the fixed-size character font. While the width of the characters cannot be increased with an impact printer, each character can be properly centered with respect to a character box so that printing from a word processing program having double-width characters can be accomplished with symmetrical appearance of the characters and underscoring being symmetrical relative to the characters. This is accomplished by the following algorithm: 1.
