A method is described which provides a consistent reproducible table- driven discrete operation and state update methodology for a data link control component. A data link control component consists of many discrete functions which must be executed in various sequences with differing results based on the current processing state. The result of a given function may subsequently cause the processing state to be updated. The Master Operation Table (MOT) provides a table-driven method to perform discrete functions in any order to accomplish a given task and to update the processing based on the result of the function. The MOT consists of entries for each type of function to be performed. For each function, a set of results exists which can be returned when that function completes.
