Abstract

As is well known, a read/write head on a magnetic disk or file may be located on and moved to a multitude of so-called cylinders. The technique hereof includes a possible anticipate access of the read/ write head, and for this access the following is done: calculate the number of cylinders between the present cylinder and the DEST cylinder. For this number of cylinders, look up the typical time from the seek profile table and add an adjustment factor T (set to 2 milliseconds at initialize, but could dynamically change based on ERROR). If this calculated time is less than TIME, then do an anticipate seek to DEST. Otherwise, seek toward DEST for the number of cylinders equivalent to TIME minus T (this number is obtained from the seek profile table).
