Data objects which are stored on write-once media, will not, in general, be stored in a linear fashion. Since the size of the control directory cannot be pre-determined, a directory management technique which will make maximum use of a scarce resource (storage space) and minimize the directory search time is required. The directory management technique described below addresses the problem of maximizing the information available in each directory block while minimizing both space consumption and the directory search time. The description which follows is broken into two sections. The first section contains a generalized description of the directory management technique. The second section states some assumptions and provides an example of one implementation.
