Control programs for a computer system frequently are provided with instructions to verify proper functioning of equipment, and to find faulty components. For example, the VM family of IBM control programs uses the DIAGNOSE command for this purpose. The DIAGNOSE X'BC' command retrieves certain device-dependent information most of which is loaded at IPL, but which can change during operation of the system. Such information is usually kept in free storage, where it may be updated during system usage, and may be readily retrieved. However, with larger and larger systems becoming possible, the amount of free storage such information may take up, can be unacceptably large. This invention provides pageable free storage for this information in which the system virtual pages may be broken into blocks of pageable free storage.
