This invention is a diagnostic function used to allow checking of the Main Store Data Error Correction Logic. With the function Horizontal Microcode (HMC) is able to inject either correctable or uncorrectable Multi-package Main Storage Data errors at any memory location. The main reason for having such a function is to allow run-time simulation of ECC errors without resorting to grounded pins on the Main Store Data bus. This allows system programmers to easily create normal error situations for testing of error recovery code. It also allows IPL testing of functions which previously were hard or impossible to check. This invention includes an addition to the horizontal microcode that allows a microcode word to inject a multi-package data error.
