A method is described to permit applications software to drive two different device types concurrently with Graphics Subroutine Library (GSL) commands by using this technique. It is critical for applications to be able to drive soft and hard copy devices concurrently with presentation or interactive mode graphics sessions. Failure to provide this level of function would preclude applications from single cycle execution to completion for a graphics presentation series. This method is defined as 'mixed mode', i.e., the application may simultaneously open several virtual terminal sessions. The application at GSL initialization defines an additional file descriptor for hard copy translation or sets a flag in the initialization operation.
