3480 Self-Adjusting Tension Transducer

The tape tension transducer described herein detects tape path transients and sends correction signals to the servo loop via two signal lines, i.e., tape tension analog and tape tension reference. The signals are derived from a piezo-resistive air bearing pressure sensor (1) that has both AC and DC components. The AC component is fed to the servo control loop, and the DC component is used in an operating range monitor. The transducer output is used directly as the tape tension analog signal as well as input to a low-pass one-hertz filter (2). The filter effectively eliminates the AC component, and through a voltage follower (3) becomes the tape tension reference signal. When in the operating range, there is minimal DC differential between the two signals.
