This article describes an automated assembly mechanism for loading and unloading large area metal foil sheets used in the fabrication of screening masks. (Image Omitted) The unique properties of large area (196 square inches) metal foils of 1-4 mils thickness necessitate the employment of automatic handling equipment to prevent wrinkling and other damage to the foils during in-process transfer operations to and from their shipping containers. Containers hold approximately 150 foils which are separated from one another by paper sheets to protect them from damage. The foils are initially positioned in a horizontal plane and must be presented in a vertical plane for the processing that follows. The disclosed automatic handling assembly mechanism is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
