Microcode Control of Band Printer Scanning Hardware

The complexity and amount of scanning hardware in a band printer can be reduced by using a microprocessor to arrange print line data, hammer addresses and band image data in shift registers that require only simple incrementing as a scanning algorithm. A microprocessor, although incapable of reliably performing the precise timing necessary for high speed printer scanning hardware, is used to precalculate data arrangements prior to starting a printing line. Referring to the figure, characters in a line of print data are prearranged in Print Line Buffer (PLB) shift register 1 by the microprocessor in the order that the print hammers are optioned during a print scan and are advanced through the shift register at the ripple rate of the printer.
