A single ribbon cartridge may be used with different width machines having different writing line lengths. Printing may occur along the entire writing line length prior to ribbon feed or from a portion of the ribbon fed across the printhead. The single ribbon cartridge also may be employed to accommodate different size printheads. This is accomplished by maintaining a constant ribbon path irrespective of the writing line length so as to prevent any slack occurring in the ribbon whereby ribbon tension is always maintained. A ribbon cartridge 1 has L-shaped arms 2 and 3 slidably supported thereby and retained in any position to which they are moved by a friction fit within the cartridge 1, for example. The cartridge 1 has a supply spool 4 from which a ribbon 5 extends to pass around a roller 6 supported in the cartridge 1.
