A method for verifying the integrity of all SPD Input/Output (I/O) bus tag lines and sub-buses, as well as the I/O Bus Unit (IOBU) bus interfaces, is achieved with a software protocol, thereby eliminating the need for additional test hardware. (Image Omitted) The SPD Bus Operations Testing Protocol is driven by control software in both the Host and in an I/O Processor (IOP). Its main objective is to test and verify the SPD I/O Bus through the issuance of programmable unit and storage operations. Both valid and invalid bus operations may be issued by either the host or the IOP in order to verify both normal bus sequencing and error status handling. The address data (A/D), origin destination (O/D), and command status (C/S) sub-buses are thoroughly tested for any data mismatch conditions which may exist.
