Abstract

An electromagnetically-actuated and valved liquid print head for printing with variable volume on paper is disclosed and generally comprises: a cover plate having an outlet orifice through which ink may be pushed so as to form an ink meniscus extending out of the orifice; means for providing desired currents; a print head body having a channel, two vented air spaces, an output reservoir with the channel connecting the output reservoir to an ink source, a metalized actuator diaphragm separating the output reservoir from one vented air space, a metalized valve diaphragm separating the channel from the other vented air space and capable of blocking the channel when actuated, and connecting means for connecting the current means to electrical leads of the metalized actuator and metalized valve diaphragms; permanent magnets arranged to produce a magnetic field through the actuator diaphragm and parallel to it such that when a current is introduced to the actuator diaphragm, the interaction of the current with the magnetic field causes the diaphragm to flex and push ink through the orifice in the cover plate, and when a current is introduced to the valve diaphragm, the interaction of the current with the magnetic field causes the diaphragm to flex and block the ink channel.
