Improved Diagnostic Capability Via Loop Back Procedure

This invention provides for improved self diagnostics on the IBM 5209 3270-5250 Link Protocol Converter by utilizing bidirectional data traffic via a cable between two connectors. During power-up, the 5209 performs an extensive set of diagnostic procedures that attempt to completely verify correct functioning of the unit. However, this procedure is not able to completely verify the transmission and receiving circuitry of the unit because of the absence of a coaxial wrap plug to complete the circuit. (Image Omitted) Without this capability, the manufacturing final test would require hardware similar to that shown in Fig. 1. This is a costly solution. With the use of readily available coaxial cable and this invention, the test hardware required for final test is reduced to that shown in Fig. 2.
