An error control protocol and a technique for implementing this protocol efficiently in software are described. The scheme is a novel elaboration of the automatic repeat request parity (ARQ/P) protocol, which is a) significantly more robust in the presence of channel noise than most currently used protocols; b) greatly increases the effective data throughput of noisy channels; and c) is amenable to efficient software implementation even on small computers, such as personal systems. The new protocol is compatible with standard data link control protocols, such as SDLC and ASYC. Introduction Most data link protocols provide error control by means of an automatic repeat request (ARQ) approach.
