Improved Process for Preparation of Squaranes

A process for the preparation of squaranes with improved electrophotographic properties is described. The compositions produced when used in a photoconductor configuration show higher charge acceptance values. Squaric acid is reacted with an excess of 5-25% of an aromatic amine, such as 3-dimethylaminophenol, at a temperature of 50-130 degrees centigrade in the presence of a mixture of an aliphatic alcohol and an azeotropic solvent. The use of an additional amount of amine does not enhance the properties of the product.
