A method is described for monitoring the operation of a rotating magnetic storage device to obtain a forewarning that head-disk interaction will occur so that the data can be copied to another medium and the storage device can be taken out of service. The method uses a special diagnostic track that is assigned to each head. At periodic intervals while the storage device is in use, a test is conducted in which the diagnostic control system moves the arm to the special track and data is read with the head. Writing before reading is the preferred option in those cases in which the read head is also used for writing. Each test includes the taking of data from one or more heads.
